No fewer than 11 of the weather balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."

So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
