The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
