Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
